At TTS we offer apprenticeships for LGV driver training in our modern fleet of vehicles with experienced instructors who are all registered on the DSA Voluntary Instructors Register. An apprentice would begin with working towards their Category C licence – rigid goods vehicle in excess of 7.5 tonnes.
To become an apprentice the minimum age is 17years old and you must hold a Category B licence
The basic format of an LGV apprenticeship is by –
- Obtaining your provisional licence for Category C.
- Undertaking an assessment drive to see what practical skills needs to be worked upon.
- Completing 3 LGV theory tests
- Undertaking a number of days (as block release) of driver training leading to the practical tests.
- Completing a portfolio of evidence of work based duties and driving to achieve your NVQ
- Attending some day release at our centre for Keyskills / Functional Skills portfolio, and tests, to bring you to industry standard (and award standard) for Maths & English (anyone with Grade C or above is exempt)
- Employee Rights & Responsibilities – Apprentices have a range of statutory rights and responsibilities under Employment Law and the employment can be affected by other legislation as well. Therefore the apprentice needs to understand their role within the organisation and the industry. This will be covered in the early stages of the apprenticeship so the apprentice is aware of their own rights and that of the employers. A certificate of competence will be issued.
Apprentices are also encouraged to demonstrate Personal learning and thinking skills as well as reflective learning which is encompassed within the training both on and off the job.
To continue your learning journey once you have completed NVQ Level 2, you can then continue to NVQ Level 3 and undertake a Category C+E licence for articulated or a rigid goods vehicle coupled to a trailer.
