Construction Plant Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship in construction follows a pattern of vocational training to meet the requirements of a Construction Skills approved framework. This will enable an apprentice to develop skills and knowledge which they can then demonstrate and evidence in a real construction environment.

There are several Plant Operations pathways you can follow:

 Groundworks

  • Building Construction
  • Demolition
  • Materials Handling
  • Road Maintenance
  • Land Based

Within each pathway there are 4 machines an apprentice must be trained on and they will gain a certificate of competency as proof. Apprentices will attend our training centre (on day/block release) for this purpose. These are items of plant such as:

  • Forward tipping dumper,
  • 180 degree excavator above/below 5 tonnes
  • Ride on roller
  • 360 degree excavator 360 above/below 10 tonnes
  • Rough terrain masted forklift
  • Telescopic handler
  • Wheeled loading shovel
  • Skid steer
  • MEWP
  • Dump truck articulated chassis

The apprentice will undertake either the Certificate or Diploma as part of their NVQ Level 2 in Plant Operations whereby they concentrate on one of those machines as part of the NVQ process. This is undertaken at work as part of on the job training and proving their competency in the workplace.

Other qualification requirements to complete:

  • Employee Rights & Responsibilities – a certificate of competence will be issued.
  • Personal learning and thinking skills as well as reflective learning which is encompassed within the training both on and off the job.
  • Keyskills/functional skills portfolio to be undertaken to demonstrate competency in Maths & English. However individuals with Grade C or above will be exempt from tests.

There will also be the opportunity to enhance the qualification to CPCS competency cards for construction site work, as well as undertaking the CPCS Health & Safety touch screen test.
